Five Things You Need to Know Today: May 8

The governor is in town, a fundraiser for Newton's 9/11 memorial and a local restaurant starts lunch service.

1. 9/11 Memorial fundraising. The will hold a fundraiser tonight at in Waltham to benefit the construction of a 9/11 memorial in Newton, which will be built at in Newton Centre. Bring the fundraising ticket (attached in the .pdf section to the right) to the restaurant between 5 p.m. - 8 p.m. and 20 percent of the food/beverages sold will benefit the memorial fund.

2. Bridge dedication. The Newton-Wellesley Lower Falls pedestrian/bicycle bridge is finally complete and State Rep. Kay Khan (D-Newton) will be joined by Gov. Deval Patrick and Lt. Gov. Tim Murray today for a ribbon cutting ceremony. The event will take place at 11:30 a.m. on the bridge (adjacent to 165 Concord St., Newton). 

3. Energy announcement. Gov. Deval Patrick will also be in the city tomorrow to make an energy announcement with Mayor Setti Warren. Patrick and Warren will announce that Newton has signed a contract that will allow 100 percent of the municipal and school department electricity to come from green or renewable sources. The announcement will take place at in the mayor's office at 12:45 p.m.

4. Jonathan's starts lunch. We reported last week that Jonathan's Bar & Grille on Needham Street i. Starting today, Jonathan's will also offer lunch between 11:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. Dinner service starts at 5 p.m. 

5. Boston Bakes. The Boston Bakes for Breast Cancer campaign started yesterday and will run until May 13. During the campaign, you can visit some local Boston restaurants/bakeries () and purchase a special dessert and the proceeds from that dessert will benefit breast cancer research.
