HISTORIC NEWTON BOOK CLUB MEETING at the Jackson Homestead and Museum

The book club will discuss When America First Met China: An Exotic History of Tea, Drugs, and Money in the Age of Sail by Eric Jay Dolin. The author tells a remarkably complex story, involving trade, ecology, ship design, international politics and cultural conflicts. The historian John Steele Gordon, writing in the Washington Post, noted that the author was “in complete control of his material” and went on to describe the book as “entertaining, informative and highly readable.” Mr. Steele noted that the history of the early China trade is helpful in understanding China today as it resumes its place among the foremost nations of the world.
