How to Clean Your Hearing Aids

Properly cared for hearing aids (and that includes cleaning your hearing aids) can last a very long time.  Follow these simple rules to ensure that your hearing aid stays clean. Start by making sure that you’ll be holding it over a soft surface to avoid damage if you drop it.

Hearing Aid Cleaning Tips
  • Clean your hearing aids and ear molds each day with a soft, dry cloth.
  • Make sure your hands are clean and dry before handling your aids.
  • Do not use water, cleaning fluids, solvents or alcohol, as these could damage your hearing aids.
  • The microphone inlets can become easily blocked. If you are having problems with your hearing aids, check that the microphone inlets are not blocked.
  • If you’re hearing aid came with wax filters that can be changed, then change the filters often so they don’t collect wax or dirt.
  • Never insert tools into the sound outlet. Doing so could damage the receiver. If you can’t clean the hearing aid completely, ask your hearing professional for help.
Additional Cleaning Tips

Sometimes the easiest way to keep your hearing aid clean is to avoid the things that will gunk it up in the first place!

Avoid contact with hairspray and/or make-up.  The fine mist of hair spray and/or make-up powder may block microphone openings, the volume control or program controls. Remove your hearing aids and place them in their case before using any hairspray or make-up.

Protect your hearing aid from dirt.  Make sure that your fingers are clean and dry before touching your hearing aid. The microphone openings are very small and may be blocked if hearing aids are handled with fingers that aren’t clean.
