NEWTON, MA – A three-alarm fire broke out in the basement of Gordon's Fine Wines and Liquors on Austin Street in Newton early Monday morning.

The fire was originally reported by a passerby around 1:45 a.m., Newton Fire Department spokesman Lt. Eric Fricke said.

It was upgraded to three alarms because of heat and ventilation issues, according to Fricke, but was quickly extinguished with minimal structural damage.

Fricke estimated that there was not more than $50,000 or $75,000 worth of damage to the actual building, but much of the store's inventory was destroyed in the blaze.
