Labor Day 2017 In Newton: What's Open, What's Going On?

Labor Day in Newton 2017 and do you have a plan for this weekend? Here are a couple ideas to get you going.

NEWTON, MA — There's good news and there's bad news about this weekend. The bad news is this is pretty much the official end to summer is upon us with Labor Day fast approaching. The good news is that you get free parking on Monday and an extra day off. After all, the whole idea behind the national holiday was to honor the social and economic achievements of American workers.

We've got you covered with what's open and what’s closed on Labor Day, and don’t forget - with the Monday holiday, trash and recycling will be delayed a day.

But lest you get sad about the end of summer here are 5 things to do with the last weekend and celebrate all the workers that came before you:

Things to do:

  • Go check out Galit's Treats, which is having it's Grand Opening at Noon on Monday in Newton Centre.
  • It's Free admission to the Historic Newton museums this weekend. That means you have no excuses to go check out the Jackson Homestead and Museum at 527 Washington St. OR the Durant-Kenrick House and Grounds, at 286 Waverley Ave. Sat, Sept. 2, between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m.
  • Get one last dip in: Monday is the last day that the Gath Pool and the Crystal Lake swimming area will be open. And Monday is slated to be a beautiful day.
  • If you're looking to get civic there's a full City Council meeting at Town Hall at 7:45 p.m. on Monday evening. Swing by and see local democracy in action.
  • Swing by the Newton Community Farm — 303 Nahanton St., Newton; for fresh produce!
    There's a farmstand on Winchester Street (at the farm).

Things to be aware of:

Newton Public Schools: All Public Schools will be CLOSED on Monday, Sept. 4

Newton city Offices: All City Offices will be CLOSED on Monday, Sept. 4 Though there is a city council meeting scheduled as of now.

Libraries: Closed Saturday, Sunday, Monday.
Trash & Recycling: There will be no trash & recycling pick-up on Monday. Pick up will be DELAYED 1 DAY the rest of the week (9/05-9/09). Place recycling & trash out 1 day after your regularly scheduled pick up day. Monday pick-up will now be picked up on Tuesday, Tuesday on Wednesday, Wednesday on Thursday, and so on.
Parking: Parking will be FREE at all meters and pay stations during the Labor Day holiday on Monday, September 4th
Gyms: Check the schedule at your gym as many have adjusted schedules for the weekend. Planet Fitness is only open 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Etc. etc.
