NEWTON, MA — The following letter to the editor was submitted by the Indigenous Peoples Day Newton Committee.

Dear Editor,

We write in support of Newton North Principal Henry Turner’s leadership in the aftermath of the Rittenhouse verdict. The verdict is extremely hurtful to many BIPOC students and staff. The circumstances surrounding Kyle Rittenhouse’s actions in Kenosha were all connected to race. Unfortunately, everything that happens in the United States is connected in some way to our history of racism and stolen land. There is no way to escape this ugly truth. We have to face it head on if we wish to address it and to achieve an equitable and just society. Thank you, Principal Turner, for making the space for the NNHS community to process the verdict and for providing teachers with useful guidance on how to best support the students and one another.
