A 24-year-old Pembroke man was charged with unarmed burglary in Newton Sunday.

NEWTON, MA – A 24-year-old Pembroke man was arrested in Newton Sunday after allegedly breaking into a home while on the phone with a police dispatcher.

According to the police report, Oscar Ledezma told police he was "cold," but aroused dispatchers' suspicions when it sounded like he was breaking into something in the background of the call.

Officers responded to where the call had originated on Austin Street and found a brown unoccupied Honda CRV running in the middle of the street. Police checked the outside of the home and spoke to the occupant, who said someone had just tried to break in.

He told police he heard banging coming from the outside of the house, which he at first believed to be his upstairs neighbors, according to the report. When it continued, he said he got up to check it out and could hear a "ruffling" of bags from the back door kitchen area, as well as a male's muffled voice talking.

In the kitchen he found his back door open and shattered glass from the door's window pane on the floor. He said he saw a tall, skinny male with a gray sweatshirt in his kitchen, who fled toward Austin Street.

Police found a man matching the suspect's description, later identified as Ledezma, kicking the front glass door of the Mattress Firm store on Washington Street and shatter one side, the report stated. Responding officers saw the Ledezma jump the fence separating Washington Street from the commuter rail tracks and the Mass. Pike.

Police commanded him to stop and he immediately put his hands up, according to the report. Ledezma is charged with malicious or wanton damaging of property for kicking out the window of Mattress Firm and unarmed burglary for the incident on Austin Street.
