Man With Famous Namesake Accused of Credit Card Fraud, Teens Suspected of Brazen Apple Store Theft: Newton Crime Log

The following are excerpts from the Newton police log. An arrest does not indicate a conviction.

Friday, Dec. 23

• Nicholas Brait, 31, of Hyde Park, was arrested for breaking and entering at night for a felony. He was also arrested on two default warrants for traffic offenses.

Saturday, Dec. 24

• A 33-year-old Brookline man was arrested and charged with OUI after allegedly leaving the scene of a crash in Newton. Police were dispatched to 10 Langley Rd. for a hit-and-run. Upon further investigation, officers arrived at an address in Brookline and asked if the gray Buick Enclave belonged to the suspect. He was taken into custody after police found he appeared intoxicated. The man was charged with OUI liquor and leaving the scene of an accident with property damage.

• A crash was reported on Parker by Boylston Street. Police spoke to George Seested, 51, of Dedham, who was the alleged driver. Police said he was sitting in his vehicle, which was stopped halfway on the sidewalk and half in the road. Police believed him to be under the influence of alcohol and arrested him. He was charged with OUI.

Tuesday, Dec. 27

• A breaking and entering of a motor vehicle was reported on Grove Street. Police found a black Acura with all four tires missing and vehicle left on bricks. The front passenger side window was also broken completely.

Thursday, Dec. 29

• Patti Simond, 51, of Woodhaven Road, was arrested following an alleged hit-and-run. The vehicle allegedly collided with a utility pole and the location of the vehicle was unknown. Police said they found the vehicle on Woodhaven Road. Simond allegedly met officers in her driveway with her keys in her hand. Police believed Simond to be under the influence of alcohol and was charged with OUI, a marked lanes violation and two counts of leaving the scene of property damage.

• A past breaking and entering was reported on Washington Street. The callers said they left the apartment around 10 a.m. that morning and came home around 1:45 p.m. Upon arrival they discovered the front door appeared to have been pried open and inside the home had been rummaged through. Missing was a diamond ring, a white/gold wedding band and a tourmaline ring.

Friday, Dec. 30

• Police responded to Clark Street for a past vandalism to a residence. The callers said the kitchen window had been shot with a pellet gun. A loud sound was heard around 4 a.m. but it was believed to be the cat knocking something over.

• A Harvard Circle resident went out to take his Christmas lights off of his tree and realized they had been cut in three places.

Saturday, Dec. 31

• A 57-year-old Charlestown man was arrested in the area of Parker Street and charged with assault and battery. Police arrived at the scene for a taxi cab fare evasion and spoke with the driver, who said he had driven the two customers home from Boston and they left the car without paying. The customers then said they attempted to pay with their credit card, but the transaction did not go through. They said he told them to try again, and the fare was doubled to $105.88. The customers said they attempted to go inside to get cash, but as they left, the driver exited the car as well and pushed one of a customers, a woman, against the cab. The driver was charged.

• A possible shoplifting in progress was reported on Boylston Street. The caller said she was in the Bloomingdale's cosmetics department when she heard a commotion coming from the Apple store. She said she saw several teens running from the Apple store with iPhones in their hands and said someone inside the store had yelled that the teens had just stolen the phones. The caller attempted to follow them and saw a man prevent a female suspect from leaving the store. The other teens ran out the south entrance of Bloomingdale's toward Rt. 9. The man advised the teen to sit until police arrived. The suspect, 15, from Dorchester, was arrested for one count of aggravated shoplifting and police recovered two iPhone 7s and two iPhone 7 Pluses. Store employees told officers that five teens entered the front of the store and ripped 12 phones off of the display tables and ran. The teens made off with the following items:

- iPhone 7 Jet Black 128 gb

- iPhone 7 Plus Black 128 gb

- iPhone 7 Black 128 gb

- iPhone 7 Silver 128 gb

- iPhone 7 Rose Gold 128 gb

Monday, Jan. 2

• Quincy D. Jones, 32, of Dorchester, was arrested for credit card fraud. Police were dispatched to Wegman's for fraudulent credit card use. An employee told officers a man had tried to use a fraudulent card at the register and he had been to Wegman's twice in the past week to purchase large quantities of liquor. That day he provided multiple credit cards, none of which went through. Police ran Jones' name and found he had two warrants out of Cambridge and one out of Somerville. He was taken into custody for those warrants and also charged with two counts of fraudulent use of a credit card.

• A caller on Forest Ave. stated that someone had entered his unlocked motor vehicle, which was parked in his driveway. He said the glove box was open and appeared to have been rummaged through, though nothing was missing.

• Carrie Ann Bowser, 40, was arrested on a warrant charge of possession of a Class A drug.

• A caller on Forest Ave. reported his unlocked vehicle broken into, but nothing was taken.

• A Forest Ave. resident said that sometime between Dec. 26 and Jan. 2, someone had entered his unlocked car in his driveway and taken a small amount of loose change, as well as his vehicle's registration.

• Sheila Rene Carrington, 49, was arrested at Auburndale Wine & Spirits after police received a report of a female customer refusing to leave. Officers determined she had an active arrest warrant out of Dorchester District Court.
