NEWTON, MA — A candidate who previously ran for the seat left by former Newton councilor Jake Auchincloss is poised for a return in 2023.

On Wednesday, former Brookline Town Meeting member David Micey filed papers with the state Office of Campaign and Political Finance to run for a city council seat. The filing papers do not say which ward Micely intends to run in, but the 2021 special election for Auchincloss' seat was in Ward 2.

In 2021, Micely and Bryan Barash lost the three-way race to At-Large Council Tarik Lucas.

In 2021, Micely told Patch he was running for council to "ensure Newton is a great place to live for people across life stages and that the city is managed in a responsible and sustainable way."

All 24 Newton councilors are up for election in November, but Micely is the first challenger to organize a committee to run. The organization of a committee does not necessarily mean a candidate will go through with the requirements to get on the ballot.
