N. Grafton Man Arrested for Driving on Heroin in Newton

The following is an excerpt from the Newton police log. An arrest does not indicate a conviction.

On Aug. 14, at 9:31 p.m., police responded to Beacon Street by Agawam Road for a report of a sign knocked down and the vehicle had fled the scene. The description of the vehicle was a gold Nissan Maxima. Police talked to a person who said the car was on Agawam Road from Beacon Street and back to his residence on the corner of those roads. He saw the Nissan with a damaged front bumper and a city sign knocked over. Some people pulled behind the Nissan to check if he was ok.

A short while later, a resident reported that he saw from his house the Nissan drive away. The driver was described as a young, white male with short hair that was slicked back. Police spotted the Nissan at the corner of Beacon Street and Chestnut Street facing eastbound on Beacon Street. The operator of the vehicle was outside by the headlights of the vehicle picking up a piece of his car. Police saw the fresh damage to the front of the vehicle. Police pulled behind the vehicle as it took a right onto Chestnut Street. While the vehicle was driving on Chestnut Street the vehicle veered off to the right and almost struck a curb and then corrected itself and pulled over.

Police approached the driver and while talking saw in plain view a spoon in the back seat that had burn marks on it, consistent with drug use. After a sobriety test, police formed the opinion that the drier was operating under the influence of drugs. He was placed in handcuffs and transported to the station. Police searched the car, which involved Belmont officer and K9 partners. Looking around the passenger door, the dog jumped towards the window. In the glove box was a clear glassine corner bag with brown residue on it. Steven Zachery Fitzgibbon, 25, 6 North Main St., North Grafton, was arrested and charged with OUI drugs, leaving the scene of property damage, possession of Class A (heroin).
