New Philharmonia Opens Season in Newton

The program features Pärt, Dvorak and Sibelius.

New Philharmonia Orchestra kicks off its 21st season on Saturday, Nov. 7, at 8 p.m., and Sunday, Nov. 8, at 3 p.m. at First Baptist Church, 848 Beacon St, Newton Center.

Francisco Noya leads the New Phil in Arvo Pärt’s Cantus (in memory of Benjamin Britten), Antonin Dvorak’s Violin Concerto with BSO Principal Violin Haldan Martinson and Sibelius’s monumental Symphony No. 2. The NPO’s 21st season is dedicated to the memory of Founding Music Director Ronald Knudsen, who passed away last March.

Francisco Noya, who serves as Conductor and Artistic Advisor for New Phil’s 2015-2016 season, will lead all three Classics programs this season.

Noya made his New Phil debut last April 26 and May 2 at the invitation of the late Ron Knudsen. The program took place at the first annual Newton Arts Festival and featured music by Ives, Kabalevsky and Saint-Saëns. Francisco Noya is Resident Conductor of the Rhode Island Philharmonic and on the conducting faculty at the Berklee College of Music.
