Newton 2021 Election: Fuller Wins Mayoral Race Against Sangiolo

Mayor Ruthanne Fuller, who was first elected in 2017 as the city's first woman mayor, will lead Newton for another four years.

NEWTON, MA —Newton Mayor Ruthanne Fuller has won the city's mayoral race against Amy Mah Sangiolo and will lead the city for another four years.

Fuller, who was elected in 2017 as the city's first woman mayor, emailed her supporters just before 10 p.m. Tuesday to tell them the news.

"I am so grateful to all of you," said Fuller in a statement. "Thank you for working hard with me on this campaign. Thank you for believing in me and in our shared vision for Newton. Thank you for loving this good City and supporting each other during COVID-19. To our neighbors who lost someone, our hearts are with you."

"All of us are so lucky to live in a city with so many people who are civic minded," she continued. "I promise to be a Mayor for all of Newton. No matter who you voted for across all of the races, I pledge to continue to listen carefully and empathetically to each one of you. From Auburndale to Nonantum and Upper Falls to Oak Hill Park and everywhere in between, I will always hear your voice."

Newton voters participated in early voting and went to the polls on Tuesday to decide who would emerge victorious in the races for mayor, City Council, and School Committee. All 24 City Council members and eight School Committee members were on the Nov. 2 ballot.

Newton not only had a contested mayoral race this year, but also four contested City Council races. Maria Scibelli Greenberg won against Kevin Riffe in Ward 1, Julia Malakie won against James Cote in Ward 3, Bill Humphrey won against Debra Waller in Ward 5, and Brenda Noel won against in Ward 6.

In addition, Alison Leary, John Oliver, Pam Wright, Andrea Kelley, Deb Crossley, Andreae Downs, Alicia Bowman, and Victoria Danberg have won the contested Councillor-At-Large positions. As far as the two contested School Committee elections go, with Paul Levy won against Shawn Fitzgibbons in Ward 6 and Kathleen Shields won against Valerie Pontiff in Ward 7.
