Newton Mayoral Election: Fuller And Sangiolo Emerge Victorious

NEWTON, MA —Newton Mayor Ruthanne Fuller and former City Councilor Amy Mah Sangiolo will be on the ballot on Nov. 2 in hopes of becoming the next mayor of the city.

Unofficial results posted from the City of Newton show the incumbent mayor received 54.6 percent of the vote in Tuesday's preliminary election, with Sangiolo at 39.1 percent and Albert R. Cecchinelli, Jr. at 6.1 percent.

"I’m honored by tonight’s result and the strong support our work received across Newton," said Fuller in an email to her supporters at 10:15 p.m. "We won 7 of Newton’s 8 wards. I’m happy to report that, as the top vote getter, we advanced to the General Election by a margin of more than 15% over our closest competitor."

"It’s official!" said the Sangiolo for Mayor Facebook page just after 10 p.m. "We’re moving on to the general! Thank you to all of our many supporters who turned out to vote today! We’re excited that 40% of Newton voters chose the candidate that will listen to all Newtonians and put the community first!"

Newton voters participated in early voting and went to the polls on Tuesday to decide which two candidates would move on to the Nov. 2 general election. In November, voters will also elect 24 members to the City Council and eight members to the School Committee.
