Newton Basketball Teams Make State Tourney

Seedings and brackets were announced Friday afternoon.

Three-quarters of Newton Public Schools' varsity basketball teams have made the South Div. 1 MIAA tournament this season.

The stunning 19-1 Lady Lions reached the #3 seed in the girls tourney and will have a bye in the preliminary round of competition. The team's first game will be a first-round match in Newton on Wednesday at 7 p.m. against the winner of #14 Whitman-Hanson (11-7) and #19 Brockton (10-10). The Whitman-Hanson and Brockton game is scheduled for Monday night.

The girls' Newton North counterparts  (11-9) were seeded at the #17 spot and will face #16 Plymouth South (10-8) Monday at 7 p.m. in a preliminary round match at Plymouth South.

As for the Newton North boys (16-6), the Tigers sit at a #7 position in the tourney and will also have a bye in the preliminary round matches. Their first-round game will take place at Newton North on Thursday at 7 p.m. against #10 North Attleboro (13-7).

The MIAA seedings for the varisty ice hockey teams are set to come out today as well as the tournament brackets. Stay tuned for updates from Newton Patch.
