Newton Boston Marathon 2017 Guide: Road Closures, Security Measures

Here's what you need to know about this year's race.

NEWTON, MA – The Boston Marathon is nearly upon us, and the 26.2-mile route takes runners through Newton on their way to the finish line on Boylston Street in Boston. There will be several road closures and parking restrictions leading up to and during the race, as well as security measures to keep in mind.

The city's 25th annual Heartbreak Hill Kids Run will take place Saturday, April 15. There will be temporary street closures along Commonwealth Avenue – including the carriage lane – from Lowell Avenue to Cedar Street between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.

The Boston Marathon route on Monday, April 17 will travel through Newton via Washington Street to Commonwealth Avenue and ultimately cross into Boston.

Road closures will occur at the following times:

  • 8:30 a.m. from the Wellesley Line – Washington Street to Beacon Street
  • 8 a.m. from Beacon Street at Washington Street to Washington Street at Commonwealth Ave
  • 8 a.m. from Washington Street at Commonwealth Ave to the Boston line

Parking restrictions will be in place on Commonwealth Avenue and portions of streets that feed into the route

Attendees are advised that this year's event will have added security and all bags and coolers are subject to police search
