Newton Cop Log: Minibike Bandit Flips Out in Cell, Ding-Dong Ditching, Elderly Shoplifter

The following are excerpts from the Newton police log. An arrest or charge does not indicate a conviction.

Fri., Sept. 5

  • A resident of Oak Hill Street said a male teenager rang the doorbell at about 5 a.m. then ran away. Police spoke with a jogger who said he saw a group of Mt. Ida College students in the area at about the same time.
  • A 70-year-old woman from Waltham was charged with shoplifting from the Trader Joe’s on Washington Street. It was her third shoplifting charge.
  • A bike was reported stolen from a residence on West Pine Street.
  • The security director of The Street said two men were attempting to steal a bicycle. An officer responded and escorted them off the property.
  • A firework was found on Chestnut Street. A member of the State Police bomb squad removed it.
  • Jonathan Payne, a homeless 23-year-old, was charged with breaking into a residence on Beacon Street and stealing a black purse, black Ugg slippers, and a debit card. He fled on a minibike but was caught by police. He was also charged with damaging his cell at Newton police headquarters after he was booked.

Sat., Sept. 6

  • A woman reported a caregiver may have stolen diamond earrings and cash from her mother’s home on Richard’s Circle.

  • A 40-year-old woman from Newton was charged with operating after suspension.
  • A resident of Cherry Place said someone stole his 24-foot extension ladder.
