Newton Fire Fighters Association Endorses Scott Lennon for Mayor

The union, which represents 181 Newton firefighters and fire house employees, is the first to endorse a candidate this election.

NEWTON, MA – The Newton Fire Fighters Association last week endorsed City Council President Scott Lennon for mayor. The union, which represents 181 firefighters and fire house employees, is the first to endorse a candidate in the 2017 mayoral campaign, according to an announcement.

The union's membership voted unanimously in favor of the endorsement Thursday night. In a statement, Newton Fire Fighters Association President Tom Lopez said the decision was based in large part on Lennon's years of experience in Newton's city government.

"We believe Scott is the best choice for Mayor of Newton because of his valuable experience. He rose through
the ranks of government from a Ward Councilor to City Council President, where he has spent the last 8 years
leading the Council and working alongside Mayor Warren towards financial stability," Lopez said. "Scott has a strong understanding of the fire department’s mission and we believe he has the vision and experience to provide us the resources needed to continue to build a level of unparalleled public safety."

Lennon officially launches his campaign Thursday night. His opponent, Ward 7 Councilor-at-Large Ruthanne Fuller, kicked off her campaign Sunday at the Scandinavian Living Center.

"I am deeply humbled that Newton’s bravest believe in my campaign’s vision for the future of this city," Lennon said in a statement. "When I first joined the City Council, I led the charge to renovate our fire stations as a matter of public safety. I believe that with the right planning Newton can have top notch emergency services just as we have top notch schools, and I’m proud that Newton firefighters agree."
