Newton Food Truck Program To Continue Through Winter

NEWTON, MA — The StrEATs program, a local food truck initiative that has been underway in Newton and other Massachusetts communities since the start of the pandemic, will continue through the winter, according to a news release from Food Truck Ventures.

According to a recent survey by the National Restaurant Association, 1 in 5 people say they are no longer going out to restaurants and 9% of respondents say they've cancelled reservations due to the resurgence of the pandemic.

“There has been a huge increase in neighborhood and corporate requests for food trucks to cater lunches and special events,” said Janet Prensky, head of Food Trucks 2 Go, a division of Food Truck Ventures, in a statement. “Think about it: Food trucks are safe since they serve outdoors, they roll in, feed folks, then roll out. And, like traditional caterers, they are creative and cost-effective.”

On average, most people consume about 90 meals a month, according to Food Truck Ventures. Some meals are made at home, some are eaten in restaurants, and others are picked up to take home. Food trucks are another way to provide meals during a time when many people remain uncomfortable with eating out.

“We created the StrEATs program in March 2020 in response to COVID—all ordering online, in advance, with scheduled & managed pick-up times," said StrEATs founder Anne-Marie Aigner in a statement. "That's what we are still doing, with some modifications, with our Neighborhood StrEATs program, and now the trucks can take walk-ups via QR codes.

“Inviting a couple of food trucks to your neighborhood, school or company is a win-win-win for
everyone: you & your neighbors, the food trucks and the employees at your company," she continued.
