Newton to Help Small Businesses, Nonprofits Go Green

A partnership will provide free energy assessments and generous green energy rebates to Newton businesses.

NEWTON, MA - Small businesses and nonprofits in Newton could help reduce the city’s carbon footprint and save money by taking advantage of a new initiative.

The Newton Business Energy Savers (NBE$) set a goal to complete 60 projects in 2016 and help participating Newton establishments reduce their energy bills by a collective $432,000 annually, or about $7,000 per year each.

“We’re saving millions through energy efficiency in our municipal buildings and our schools, and we want to help Newton’s small businesses and nonprofits do the same,” Mayor Setti Warren said in the announcement.

“This program provides cost-effective energy solutions for any enterprise that wants to save energy, increase profits, attract customers and be a good neighbor. It will also help Newton meet its commitment to reduce energy use throughout the city by 20 [percent],” the mayor said.

New England’s largest energy provider, Eversource, has chosen World Energy Efficiency Services (“WEES”) to work with the city and the chamber. WEES will provide energy solutions such as free on-site energy assessments.

Generous rebates could help cover 70 percent of the cost of installation projects for businesses and nonprofits that take action. Most of these projects would pay for themselves within about year, according to Eversource and the mayor’s office.

Services offered by WEES include: heating and air conditioning upgrades; energy efficient natural gas measures; and water saving measures, according to the mayor’s office.

“Energy efficiency in the business sector is the lowest cost energy resource we have in Massachusetts,” Andrew W. Savitz, Newton’s Sustainability Director said in the statement. “We are excited to see what we can accomplish in Newton.”
