NEWTON, MA — Mayoral candidate Amy Sangiolo is urging the City of Newton to follow Belmont's lead by instituting an indoor mask mandate.

Over the past two weeks, Middlesex County has seen a 100% increase in COVID-19 cases and a 62% increase in hospitalizations, placing it in the CDC's high-risk category for Level of Community Transmission.

“As mayor, I would immediately enact an indoor mask mandate in Newton, just like the one Belmont has put in place," said Sangiolo in a statement. "I'm not going to wait for Charlie Baker to weigh in on something so obvious. Instead, I would follow the CDC guidance in order to protect Newton residents."

"Why not do everything we can to keep each other safe?" she continued. "Let's look out for our librarians, retail and restaurant workers, grocery store employees, our children, vulnerable community members and keep everyone safe."

Sangiolo said it is especially important to institute a mask mandate now due to summer traveling. Such precautions will help Newton get ahead of the curve as the Delta variant causes a significant increase in cases nationwide.
