Newton North Boys' Hockey Dethrones Top-Ranked Braintree

The Tigers bested the Wamps in a double overtime barn burner.

NEWTON, MA - The Newton North boys' hockey team pulled off a 3-2 upset against Braintree thanks to some late-game heroics from junior Pat Mullowney.

The No. 8-ranked Tigers took down the Wamps Friday in a double-overtime victory in the Division 1 South Quarterfinals.

Braintree came into the game the top-seeded team, having secured a first-round bye.

After taking an early lead in the first period, Newton North cooled off as Braintree halved the score in the second and tied it up in the third with about three minutes left to play, according to WIcked Local Newton.

The teams remained scoreless in the first overtime, but with just over two minutes left in the second overtime junior Pat Mullowney put one in to give the Tigers the victory.

Newton North will next face off against Franklin in a semifinal game at Gallo's Ice Arena in Bourne at 8 p.m. Wednesday night.
