Newton North Girls Steamroll Dedham

The Tigers defeat the Marauders, 60-32.

Dominating in all phases of the game, the girls basketball team handed a 60-32 drubbing Wednesday night at the Newton North Reggie Smith Gymnasium.

The Tigers’ multi-faceted approach was epitomized by Djaidah Wynn. The senior guard netted 13 points and grabbed seven rebounds—both game highs—and also had three steals.

“She’s been scoring a lot,” said Newton North head coach Hank DeSantis. “Obviously, she means a lot to us defensively. If she continues to defend at a high level, we’ll be pretty good.”

With the victory, the Tigers improve to 9-6 on the season. The Marauders, meanwhile, slip to 6-11.

Dedham head Don Savi noted his team was coming off an overtime loss to Norwood the previous night, and because of that, lacked the energy to compete with Newton North.

“I don’t think we were ready for the speed of the game tonight,” said Savi. “Like I said, we were just a step slow. They’re a good team.”

Unlike the Marauders, the Tigers contained plenty of energy to begin the contest and quickly went on a 10-2 run. That was capped off when Ella Scheuerell grabbed an offensive board and drained a basket. The senior guard finished the first quarter with eight points.

While they continued to augment their lead, the Tigers ruled the glass. Newton North would end the first half with not only a 32-16 lead, but also a 15-6 edge in rebounds.

“Hopefully we can continue to do that because that’s been a focus of ours for a long time,” DeSantis said about rebounding.

In the third quarter, the Tigers pounded the ball inside to senior center Megan Gentile, who scored eight points in that period and helped Newton North to a 48-20 advantage. From there, the Tigers cruised to the 60-32 victory.

The Lady Tigers will face rival Brookline in their next game, which will take place at 6:45 p.m. Friday in the Newton North Reggie Gym.
