Newton To Open Cooling Location Amid Record Heat In MA

NEWTON, MA — The city will open the Cooper Center as a cooling location Friday and Saturday as high temperatures and dangerous heat continue across much of Massachusetts.

The air-conditioned Cooper Center for Active Living will be available to anyone looking to escape the heat during its regular holiday weekend hours. The city encouraged residents without access to air conditioning to take advantage of the facility. The Cooper Center will also be open during its normal operating hours on Sunday, though the city has not designated it as an official cooling center that day.

The National Weather Service has warned of dangerous heat across much of the state this week, with heat index values expected to exceed 100 degrees in some areas. The hot and humid conditions are expected to continue through Thursday before temperatures begin to ease heading into the holiday weekend.

"Although anyone can suffer from heat-related illness, some people are at greater risk than others: older adults, young children and those who are sick or overweight," city officials said in a statement.

Officials also urged residents to drink plenty of water, avoid strenuous activity during the hottest parts of the day, and check on elderly neighbors or others who may need assistance.

While the city has not designated any additional official cooling centers for the holiday weekend, residents may also find relief from the heat at the air-conditioned Newton Free Library on 330 Homer St., which will be open during its regular summer operating hours.

The cooling center will be open at the following times and location:

Cooper Center for Active Living (345 Walnut St., Newtonville)

• Friday, July 3: 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.
• Saturday, July 4: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
• Sunday, July 5: Open during normal operating hours.
