The following are excerpts from the Newton police log. An arrest does not indicate a conviction.

Incidents, Aug. 31

  • Police made an arrest. Joshua Brett Steinman, 30, 130 Old Colony Ave., Quincy, was arrested and charged with operating a vehicle after suspension.
  • Police were traveling southbound on Highland Street and received a LoJack alert when approaching Highland Street and Chestnut Street. Police then took a left northbound on Chestnut Street and received another LoJack alert as I was approaching Davis Street. Other units were in the area and they were able to locate the vehicle, located on Whitlow Road. The vehicle was a 1998 Toyota 4Runner, brown. The engine and brakes were cold to the touch and the vehicle appeared to have been there for several hours. It had been reported stolen out of Waltham earlier that day at 9 a.m.
  • Around 7:15 p.m., police responded to 280 Cypress Street, at the Bowen School, for a report of indecent exposure. The reporting party said to police that about ten minutes prior while in the rear of the school exercising, three young black males around high school age on bicycles entered the rear of the school through Langley Road. All three were wearing basketball clothing, T-shirts and gym shorts. Police did not get a description of the boys faces. The bicycles were described as BMX style. The reporting person said she heard the boys yell over to her, yelling profanities. The boys then left the rear of the school back through Langley Road and shortly after one of them came back to the rear of the school on foot. The boy yelled, “Do you want to see my &J^%?” and then lowered his shorts, reached down the front of his crotch area and pulled out his genitals. The boy fled the area out toward the Langley Road area.
  • Police were dispatched to 88 Needham St., AT&T wireless, for shoplifting. The reporting party said a male, described as African American, approximately six feet, wearing a grey and white shirt, blue jeans, a red baseball hat, and Nike Jordan sneakers. The employee asked he wanted assistance. The male refused help and when he walked away, the male immediately grabbed an iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 plus and attempted to pull them off the wall. The only phone successfully removed was the black iPhone 6. The male then, while holding the phone, ran out and headed toward Kenneth Ave.
  • Police responded to Woodchester Road for a report of breaking and entering into a motor vehicle. The woman’s 2014 Acura MDX was in her driveway all weekend. The day prior, around 2 p.m., she went to her car to discover that her Persol sunglasses were missing, along with an orange container from the passenger seat. Also, her console was rummaged through.
