Newton Police: Man Scammed Out of $20,000 After He Gives SS to 'Woman from Africa' Promises Inheritance

  • Police took a report that someone took a resident’s blue city trash barrel.

Incidents, Friday, July 3

  • Police took a report for larceny. A resident said that when he arrived at Crystal Lake Bath House, someone stole his blue bag from the lakeside while he was swimming.
  • Police were dispatched to Auburn Street for a report of a past breaking and entering to a motor vehicle. A woman said her vehicle was parked at her house from the evening before until 3 p.m. on this day. It was parked in the driveway beside the residence. At 3 p.m., she got in her car and started driving when she noticed the GPS was missing. She did not see any signs of forced entry and said it may have been unlocked.
  • A resident came to the front desk to report that he had been the victim of a scam. He was scammed between $15,000 to $20,000. A woman named “Carinna Williams in Africa” had asked for money to acquire an inheritance being held by accountants. In return he was to receive an undisclosed amount of money. He provided the woman with his bank information and social security number.
