Newton Police Send Support to #WhyNotDevin

Devin Suau, 6, of Framingham has a rare form of cancer and an inoperable tumor on his brain stem. His family is ready for a comeback.

NEWTON, MA – The Newton Police Department is rallying around six-year-old Devin Suau, a Framingham boy diagnosed with a rare form of cancer and an inoperable tumor on his brain stem.

Devin's battle has sparked a movement in Framingham and beyond called #WhyNotDevin. His story began in January, when he fell off his snowboard and his family took him to the doctor for a possible concussion.

The diagnosis was much worse.

Devin was found to have an extremely rare form of pediatric cancer known as Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma. He now has an inoperable tumor on his brain stem.

He has somewhere between 8 months and 2 years to live, his family was told.

His parents, James and Christine, are hoping for a miracle. So the Facebook group #WhyNotDevin was launched and a GoFundMe appeared, both asking why Devin can't be the first to survive this cancer which impacts between 200-300 kids a year in the U.S.

"Be part of the greatest comeback story ever told!" the Facebook page encourages.

This GoFundMe group has already earned more than $190,000 as of Wednesday afternoon. The Suaus continue to search for a cure.

Devin is the youngest of four brothers. He is as active a 6-year-old as you'll find - a soccer player, lacrosse player, and snowboarder.

"Devin has spunk and a fun personality," his family wrote the GoFundMe post. "He likes to dance and make funny faces. In fact, it’s hard to find one picture where he isn’t making silly faces. He wants to be noticed and will make himself known."

On Tuesday, Devin garnered some more fans at the Newton Police Department when several officers posed with letters spelling out #WhyNotDevin in support of the young boy.

Patch hopes Devin continues to make himself known. Contribute to his GoFundMe here.
