Moldova

344 Watertown Street

Moldovan natives Artur and Sandra Andronic bring their "rustic farmhouse fare" – cabbage and potatoes, thick soups, and fresh cheeses – to Newton, the Globe wrote. And both the Globe and Boston Magazine agree the sweet pastry "placinte la tigaie" is the restaurant's crown jewel.

KoKo Bakery

232L California Street

Though her roots are in the Japanese style of baking, owner Nobuko Maruyama has range, according to the Globe. Shoku pan, buns filled with red bean paste and curry rolls – Japanese staples – are integrated with baguettes, rye loaves, French country bread, croissants, brownies and cheesecake.
