NEWTON, MA – The 2016-17 school year is nearly upon us, and we're all checking off those last-minute items on our back-to-school list.

With that comes making preparations for the upcoming school year as students head back to class.

The first day of school in Newton is Tues., Sep. 6. Here are nine more important dates on the Newton Public Schools calendar this fall:

October 3: Rosh Hashanah, no school

October 12: Yom Kippur, no school

November 3: Early release, all schools

November 11: Veterans Day, no school

November 23: Early release at 12 p.m.

November 24, 25: Thanksgiving Break, no school
