Newton Superintendent To Review MCAS Results

The state just released MCAS results. Newton is working on deciphering the scores.

NEWTON, MA — It appears Newton students exceeded performance when compared with the State average on Math, English Language Arts and Science at Newton Public Schools, according to data the state just released.

"We are still in the process of analyzing the data and should have more of a sense of the data at the end of next week," said Superintendent David Fleishman.

Assistant Superintendent for Teaching and Learning Mary Eich will present to the School Committee at the second meeting in November, he said.

The next-generation MCAS scores given in grades 3-8 are only in their second year, and officials have warned against rushing to judgement as they establish a baseline. Students in grade 10 took the "legacy" tests, which are in their final year. Read more about legacy and next-generation tests here.

The idea of the tests is to measure the district and individual schools on how they are doing when it comes to education.
