NewTV Art Gallery Showcases Local Talent

Exhibits at Newton's cable access station display local resident art.

When NewTV's Melinda Gordon first laid eyes on the white walls of the Needham Street TV studio, she had an epiphany.

Gordon, NewTV's education television coordinator, realized she could use parts of the new studio as an art gallery.

"I encourage both emerging and established local artists to have shows and openings here and get exposure," Gordon said. "The nice thing is that we're open long hours and people have access to the art exhibits seven days a week."

Starting Friday, a preview of the Newton Open Studios Fall Juried Art and Craft Show  will occupy the exhibit space. An opening night celebration will be held from 6pm-8pm.

Each exhibit starts with an opening night reception, Gordon said, and the event is promoted on NewTV's weekly news program.

"We give exposure and promote their openings," Gordon said.

The Newton Open Studios Fall Juried Art and Craft Show will have a full exhibit on Nov. 5 and 6 at the Newton Cultural Center.

In 2006, NewTV moved to its current location at 23 Needham Street. Gordon, who has degrees in art and art therapy, volunteered to be a curator of the white-wall space. The gallery operates year round and is free and open to the public.

This past summer, stills from short animations created by students from Newton South High School's Media Lab were on display July 15 through October 15th and NewTV broadcasted their animations.

Gordon said that she changes the exhibits quarterly with the exception of the art and craft show preview, which will run for three weeks.

Past exhibits at NewTV include works by multi-media artist, Carol Blackwell as well as pen and ink drawings and watercolor paintings by Helen Cohen, the mother of former Newton Mayor David Cohen

Every summer, though, Gordon said she displays student artwork.

This year's student artwork was drawn from 3D animation classes taught by Newton South High School teacher Carol Ober.

"The kids are hidden gems; they're infinitely creative and just do amazing work," Ober said. "I want the community to see this."

"NewTV is a great outlet (for the artwork)," Ober added.

Josh Cohen, a Newton South sophomore whose work was on display, said this was his first time having work exhibited. Cohen (no relation to Helen Cohen) said he is continuing the animation courses this year with Ober.

"I've never done anything like this before," he said. "It's a unique opportunity."
