NewTV Named the "Best Community Media Center"

The station and media center recently won several awards from the Alliance for Community Media Northeast.

NewTV Media Center in Newton, MA has just been notified that they have won three awards in the Alliance for Community Media Northeast Region's Fall Video Festival.

Headlining the awards, NewTV was named the Best Community Media Center for stations with an operating expense over $500k. The submission was entered with a program called Your Vision Channeled, featuring a behind the scenes look at NewTV and the highlights of the organization in the past year.

"We are extremely thrilled to be honored with this award," commented Executive Director, Bob Kelly. "I think this speaks volumes about the quality of the programming produced by the staff, producers, NewTV members and the Newton community. We are trying to push community media to places we've never been and we are grateful to be honored by our peers in this industry."

Newton Newsmakers with Charlie Shapiro brought home the first place prize for the Non-Professional Issues and Political Process category for a recent episode. Shapiro has produced Newton Newsmakers since 2009 and his gain attention throughout the community as one of the most well thought and produced series on NewTV. His consistent crew of Deb Shapiro, Mark Marderosian, Bob Palmer and David Shapiro have brought a strong level of technical experience to go along with Shapiro's savvy hosting. This is Shapiro's first ACM-NE festival award.

NewTV also raked in a first place prize in the Professional Children & Youth category for The Big Bad Bully, a co-production betweenNewTV and The Shmonster Project. Producer Melinda Gordon and editor Andrew Eldridge of NewTV were approached with the idea of doing a puppet television show that involved a positive message: stop bullying. The Shmonster Project, the brainchild of Monty Greer and Ryan Bovinett, uses a variety of hand made, professional puppets to convey positive messages within schools. The program is currently running on the Education Channel and you can check the program listings to see when it will air next.

And finally, Newton North student Johnny Medlar took home second place in the Non-Professional Music and Performance category forJohnny Medlar: Gun Us Down. The video involves original lyrics rapped in front of a green screen layered upon archival war footage. The program is currently running on the Education Channel, and you can check out Johnny's current show Tiger Magazine Monday-Friday at 6:30 pm on NewTV's Education Channel.
