Patch Picks: Ice Skating in the Newton Area

It may not seem like it, but winter is here. And with winter comes ice skating, so here are our picks for places to lace up and glide across the ice.

It may seem as if winter is never going to arrive in full force here in New England, but trust us- it will. And though the outdoor ice skating rinks still need a little help from Mother Nature to be solid enough for skating, there are also indoor locations where you can get in touch with your inner Nancy Kerrigan or Brian Boitano. Check Patch for updates as to when the outdoor locales are open and ready for skating.

(outdoor) – Lessons available when rink is open. Hours: Mon- Fri, 3pm – 9pm (opens one hour earlier on Tues); Sat, Sun, holidays and vacation, 10am – 9pm.

(indoor)- Just over the line in Brighton, the Daly rink offers season and day passes. Classes are also available. Hours: Mon – Fri, 9am- 12am; Sat, 9am – 4pm; Sun, 9am- 2pm.

Coffin Ice Rink (indoor) – Located at the . Available for rental for practices and birthday parties, but not generally open to the public for “free skating.” Home ice for the Newton North Tigers. See website for more information.

Community-built Ice Rinks (outdoor) – Building on the success of the Hyde Centre Ice Rink, the villages of Newton Centre and Newtonville built their own community ice rinks this year. The rinks will open for the season once it is cold enough for the ice to freeze.

  •  is located near the intersection of Langley Road and Centre Street, across from . It will be open 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. throughout the winter.
  • is located at the Hyde Community Center on the outfield of the softball field and run by the Newton Highlands Community Development Corp. Hours to be determined once rink is opened, but traditionally it has been open daily from 9am – 9pm.
  • is located behind the softball diamond at Albemarle Field. Once opened, the rink will be open daily from 9:00 a.m. - dusk and Fri. & Sat nights from 5:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. (times to be confirmed).

 (indoor) – Right next door in Watertown is Ryan Rink, the home ice for the Newton South Lions. The arena is professional-sized and seats 1,250 people. Private rental hours: Mon. - Fri., 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. Public skating hours: Sat., Sun., 7 a.m. - 11 p.m.
