Patch Picks: Places to Listen to Live Music in Newton

It should be music to your ears to discover that there are many places in Newton to hear live music, from classical to contemporary and from pop to karaoke. Get out and give a listen!

– Want to see the musical stars of tomorrow before they hit it big? Or see the stars of today as they support local student musicians? Then check out the concert at the All Newton Music School. They have alumni and faculty concerts, student recitals and the popular Con Brio luncheon-and-lecture series. And since this is their centennial year, they will be holding a special concert with alumni saxophonist Ned Rothenberg on April 1. Tickets to this and their other shows, as well as additional information, are available at their website.

- An orchestra rather than an actual place, the “New Phil” plays in Newton and adjacent towns. They are in residence at the Andover Newton Theological School, but upcoming concerts (see their schedule) will be held at the . The New Phil hosts a Family Discovery Series in conjunction with the Newton All-City Orchestra and the Suzuki School of Newton, including a sing-a-long to celebrate the opening of Red Sox season.

- If you're on a budget and looking to take in some great tunes on the weekend, you don't have to go much farther than the Newton Free Library. A wide variety of groups grace the stage in the Druker Auditorium most Sunday afternoons, including Jazz trios, string quartets and folk musicians from around the world. The concerts typically start at 2 p.m. and are free and open to the public.

- If you want to listen to more current music or actually want to get up on stage yourself, Union Street is the place to go. Their third floor houses a venue for local acts to perform and they host karaoke on a regular basis. They also have a DJ who spins tunes for your dancing pleasure- and really, who doesn’t sing along while shaking their groove thing?

- Their website says “Come and join us for dinner and stay to watch your favorite singer,” though it looks like the return of the Celtics may delay their regular Saturday night entertainment for a bit. So linger over your wings or burger, take in the game and then sit back and enjoy the live music. There’s no additional cover charge, so you can make a full night of it for just the price of your meal.
