Police Log: Teen Faces Drug Charges and a Jewelry Store is Robbed

Teen arrested for drug charges

A Newton teen was arrested Wednesday after he was allegedly caught with marijuana and drug distribution materials.

According to police reports, a Newton officer was on patrol near Los Angeles Street and Allison Street when he spotted three young males in . One male, who had a black backpack, was unzipping the bag and "looking around nervously." Once the teen spotted the police cruiser, he quickly zipped up the bag and walked away.

The officer continued to circle the park, keeping an eye on the group. Reports said the teen with the backpack continued to look nervous as he walked around in circles.

Eventually, the teen ditched the bag in the bushes, police said. The officer walked over to the bushes to retrieve the backpack, which was found to contain a DVD player, an Ice Age DVD, a MacBook pro, a cell phone charger and a bag containing a substance believed to be marijuana. 

According to reports, the bag contained 11 individual plastic bags filled with what appeared to be marijuana, totaling roughly one ounce. The officer also found 24 other new, empty plastic baggies. 

The 15-year-old Newton male was arrested and charged with distributing Class D drug and receiving stolen property over $250. 

Another arrest in Stearns Park

In addition to the above incident involving drug charges, Newton officers also arrested a Newton man at Wednesday on two warrants out of Waltham District Court. 

Christopher Elisha Raheem Williams Jr., 21, of 42 Roundwood Road, was arrested on a warrant for larceny from a building as well as a warrant for larceny from a person. 

Bags of jewelry stolen from apartment

A resident living in the Imperial Towers at 280 Boylston St. told Newton Police Wednesday that sometime after Dec. 1, 2011, two bags of jewelry were stolen from her residence. 

A total of eight pieces of jewelry were stolen from the apartment including a 15-karat yellow gold women's diamond necklace, a 14-karat yellow gold women's diamond ring, a pair of 14-karat gold women's diamond earrings, a pair of women's 14-karat gold earring jackets, an 18-karat white and yellow gold women's diamond "knot" ring, a pair of 18-karat gold yellow gold "clip" earrings, a 15-karat yellow gold women's charm bracelet and a 14-karat yellow gold women's stone "jadeite" ring.  

Break-in on Oak Hill Street

Police responded to a home on Oak Hill Street Wednesday after a resident reported someone had broken into his house. 

According to reports, the resident left the home around 1 p.m. Wednesday and returned between 1:40 p.m. and 2 p.m. When he arrived back home, he found the diamond-shaped window on the front door was shattered and the front door was open. 

After entering his house, the resident reported that his bedroom had been rummaged through. According to reports, drawers from the bureau and a dresser had been emptied onto the bedroom floor. 

The resident was unsure if there were any items stolen, as the intruder only rummaged through his wife's items.

Assault and battery

Following an alleged incident reported on Wednesday (June 27) police are seeking a hearing against a 30-year-old Easton woman for charges of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon (iPhone).

Warrant arrest

A Newton man was arrested Wednesday after police found he was wanted on four active warrants, reports said. 

Garnett Niles, 20, of 457 Centre St. Unit D, was arrested on four warrants out of Newton District Court, police said. 

Teen arrested for assault

A Newton teen was arrested Wednesday evening following an alleged assault incident involving a cell phone, reports said.

Giovanni E. Salazar, 17, of 280 California St. #4, was charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon (cell phone), domestic assault and battery, and malicious destruction of property over $250, police said.

Newton K-9 unit deployed; man faces drug charges

A Newton man was arrested Thursday after he was found in possession of narcotics, reports said. 

According to police reports, an officer was on patrol in Nonantum and spotted a car parked in the parking lot with someone reclining in the driver's seat. The officer walked over to the vehicle to conduct a well being check on the person in the car. 

The officer reported that a large bottle of prescription medication was visible in the center console. In addition, a bag containing a substance that was "either marijuana and heroin" was on the passenger seat. The officer also spotted a clear plastic bottle on the floor of the car that had been burnt on one end. 

When asked to get out of the car, the man who was in the driver's side seat tried to hide the prescription bottle under the passenger seat of the car. Reports also said he kept placing his hands in his pockets, even after he was instructed not to do so.

The man was identified as Michael Diroma Jr., 20, of 308 California St. #12. He was arrested and charged with possession of a Class E narcotic (Clindamycin) and knowingly receiving stolen property, police said. 

In addition, police dispatched to search the car for other drugs and narcotics. The dog found just the bag of marijuana that was located on the passenger seat. No other drugs were found in the car, reports said. 

Newton Centre jewelry store robbed

Police responded to Como Jewelry on Union Street Thursday after the store owner reported someone threw a rock through the store's glass window and stole a piece of jewelry.

According to reports, the owner responded to the store after receiving a call from his alarm company. After looking at surveillance footage, he spotted a white male wearing a black hat, ski mask, white shirt and dark colored pants throw a rock through the window at 4:38 a.m. The man then grabbed a piece of jewelry and fled. 

Truck broken into, compressor stolen

Police responded to Kendrick Street Thursday after a truck owner reported that someone had broken into his vehicle and stole a compressor out of the back. 

According to reports, the man was working at a residence on Kendrick Street and he left the truck there. When he arrived in the morning to start work, he found the lock on the back of the truck was missing. In addition, the compressor and its power cable were missing from the back of the truck. 

The compressor was described as a grey, 20-gallon air compressor with red lettering. The power cord was made of copper and approximately 150 inches long. 

Stolen ladder

While responding to an incident on Rumford Avenue Thursday morning, police took a report from employees at landscaping company that said a ladder was stolen from their property sometime overnight.

Car break-ins

Police responded to the following reports of vehicle break-ins:

• Pearl Street - Wednesday. A woman reported her car was broken into sometime between Sunday at 5 p.m. and Monday (June 25) at 4 p.m. Reports said the woman left the car unlocked in her driveway.
• Lincoln Street - Thursday. Sometime between 11 p.m. Tuesday and 8 a.m. Wednesday, someone entered an unlocked vehicle parked in a driveway. 
• Reservoir Avenue - Thursday. Sometime between 10 p.m. Tuesday and 3 p.m. Wednesday, someone entered an unlocked car parked in a driveway.
• Lee Road - Thursday. Sometime between 9:30 p.m. on Monday and 10 a.m. Tuesday, someone broke into an unlocked car parked in a driveway. 
• Charlesbank Road - Friday. Sometime overnight Thursday into Friday, someone broke into a locked van that was parked on the street. 

Stolen bicycles

According to reports, two males left their bikes chained to a street sign near the intersection of Waverley Avenue and Church Street around 12:15 a.m. Thursday. When they returned around noontime, the bikes were missing. 

Break-in on High Street

A resident living on High Street told police Thursday that someone broke into her residence sometime between 10 a.m. on June 9 and 7 p.m. on June 12 and stole three jewelry boxes.

According to reports, the jewelry boxes were located on top of a dresser and were wooden. The thief may have entered in through an unlocked door or window, reports said, as there were no signs of forced entry. 

Domestic disturbance leads to arrest

A Newton man was arrested Friday after police responded to Boylston Street for reports of a domestic disturbance.

Krzysztof Grzegorz Sobczak, 34, of 619 Boylston St., was arrested following the incident, reports said. Note: Police did not list specific charges in this report.
