Remembering Newton's September 11th Victims

Sunday marks the 15th anniversary of the attacks.

NEWTON, MA – On Sunday, Americans across the country will gather to remember the September 11th attacks.

More than 3,000 people, including eight Newton residents and natives, lost their lives 15 years ago. On Sunday, we reflect on their memory:

Mark Bavis, 31

From The New York Times' Portraits of Grief: Bavis, an avid hockey fan and former Boston University Terrier, was a talent scout for the Los Angeles Kings. He was flying west for training camp and took United Airlines Flight 175 from Boston.

Paige Farley-Hackel, 46

Portraits of Grief: Farley-Hackel was on American Airlines Flight 11 to California, where she and her friend, Ruth, were going to bring Ruth's 4-year-old daughter to Disneyland. Ruth and her daughter, Juliana, were on United Airlines Flight 175, which struck the south tower.

Nicholas Humber, 60

According to Wicked Local, Humber was an original employee of the EPA and helped found the national waste-to-energy and recycling programs that were precursers to the curbside system. He was killed on American Airlines Flight 11.

Aaron Jacobs, 27

Portraits of Grief: Jacobs, who worked at Cantor Fitzgerald, loved living in Manhattan's Upper East Side and traveling. He and his fiancée, Jeannine, were planning a safari in Africa for their honeymoon.

Stuart Meltzer, 32

Portraits of Grief: Meltzer, an energy broker at Cantor Fitzgerald, loved talking baseball with his brother, Larry. The two had season tickets to the Red Sox and Patriots, but the games took a backseat once Stuart became a father. "I'd say, 'Come on, man, let's go to a game,'" Larry said. "But he'd say, 'Nah, I've got to spend time with Jake. When you have kids you'll understand.' I think I understand now."

Richard Ross, 58

Portraits of Grief: Ross, founder and CEO of the Ross Group, coached his son's baseball and basketball teams and always found time for his family. On September 11, he arrived early for his flight, American Airlines Flight 11, and spoke briefly with his wife.

Rahma Salie, 28

Wicked Local: Salie moved with her family to Newton before attending Wellesley College. She was the chief operating officer of a local firm and on her way to a wedding in California with her husband when they were killed on Flight 11. She was seven months pregnant.

Amy Toyen, 24

Portraits of Grief: Toyen was attending a trade show in Windows of the World at 1 World Trade Center to demonstrate a software product from her company, Thomson Financial in Boston. She was set to be married to her fiancée, Jeffrey Gonski, the following June.
