Senator Ed Markey Comes To Newton For Town Hall

Here's what to know about that.

NEWTON, MA — Sen. Ed Markey who went to Boston College for both undergrad and law school will be at the college for a town hall event Sunday to talk about political issues and take questions directly from the audience.

Markey was hosting a town hall at Amherst in January and suggested to one of his interns, a student on the executive board of the College Democrats of Boston College, that they should host one at Boston College.

The College Democrat group jumped at the idea, joining with the Political Science Department to host the event, which is open to anyone who wants to show up.

Markey has recently called on Mark Zuckerberg to come to Congress and testify to under oath. He's called President Donald Trump's proposals to impose death penalty on dealers a distraction, and said he's in favor of solutions that save lives like expanding access to treatment and recovery programs. Markey has also favored net neutrality and regularly makes it known that he doesn't exactly agree with the president.

"People are definitely excited on campus and we have a strong Facebook response. The event is geared towards both Newton residents and students. We hope that anyone who would like to attends and can ask their questions to the senator, whether it be MA issues or broader," said Matthew Lynch of the College Democrats in an email to Patch.

Organizers say the format, as with most Town Halls, will be loose.

"I expect Markey will talk for a bit about the current issues he is fighting for and then will answer questions from the audience," said Lynch.

More than 100 people are expected to show up. Seating will be first come first serve.

Markey has been serving as the junior United States Senator from Massachusetts since 2013. From 1976 to 2013 he was the U.S. Representative for Massachusetts's 5th congressional district. Between the two offices, Markey has been in Congress for 41 years. He previously served in the Massachusetts House of Representatives from 1973 to 1976.
