Both recipients share a similarity in which their family dynamics have made an impact in their lives and reflect how they have persevered through challenges, stayed motivated and achieved.
Jonnai Howard graduated from Newton South High School and will attend Howard University in fall 2020. Howard is interested in pursuing a nursing program in college due to the discrepancy she sees in healthcare provided for people of color and how marginalized communities do not get what they deserve and are entitled to. She has contributed her leadership skills in various organizations including Legacy Scholars, Camp Harbor View and Courageous Conversations on Race. While balancing her extracurricular activities, she has also achieved a high academic record. Howard was raised by her single mother and grandmother and seeks to give back to them after sacrificing everything for her to achieve.

Alyssa Medin graduated from Mt. Alvernia Academy in Newton and will attend St. Olaf College in fall 2020. Perseverance through various challenges has allowed her to overcome obstacles and achieve. In her home life, she has dealt with alcoholism, homophobia and poverty. Not only did she deal with medical issues with her family members but she had dealt with her own as well – she is a cancer survivor after having brain surgery to remove a tumor. Although she has dealt with such obstacles, she found herself overcoming them through work and academic persistence – ultimately achieving a 4.0 GPA. For extracurricular activities, she was involved with Model UN where won several awards, debate and worked a part-time job as a waitress to support the family.
