Shake Shack Kicks Off Great American Shake Sale

On Sunday Shake Shack began its Great American Shake Sale, a fundraising effort to end childhood hunger in America.

Throughout May, the company is offering customers who donate $2 or more to No Kid Hungry a card for a complimentary hand-spun shake, valued at $6.

Last year Shake Shack surpassed its goal of $350,000 by more than $154,000, raising more than $1 million in the five years since the Great American Shake Sale began.

This year the goal is $500,000.

Proceeds to No Kid Hungry help fund nutrition programs like school breakfast, summer meals and classes that educate low-income families on how to cook healthy, affordable foods. According to a press release, $2 can provide kids with 20 meals; if Shake Shack reaches its goal of $500,000, that’s 5 million additional meals for children.

“As we embark on our 5th Annual Great American Shake Sale, I can only express my sincere gratitude to No Kid Hungry for their work to end childhood hunger and to our guests, who continue to support and surprise us every day,” Randy Garutti, Shake Shack CEO said in the release.

The campaign will take place at all of Shake Shack's locations in Massachusetts, including its outlet at The Street in Chestnut Hill.

Shake Shack also has shops on Newbury Street, Harvard Square and at The Legacy in Dedham.

The fundraiser is inspired by Bake Sale for No Kid Hungry, an initiative that encourages individuals to host bake sales in their community to raise money for the organization.

To pay homage to its roots, Shake Shack's May Custard Calendar emphasizes baked goods. This year's flavors are Caramel Pretzel, Oatmeal Crème Pie, Red Velvet, Cookies N' Chocolatey Cream, Brownie Batter and Strawberry Cheesecake. All flavors can be made into shakes as well.
