Stephen O'Brien Jr., Navy Vet, Lifelong Newton Resident, Dies at 73
O'Brien served in the Navy and worked for the Newton public schools.

Stephen J. O’Brien Jr., a lifelong Newton resident, died suddenly July 7, 2015 at St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center in Brighton. He was 73.
Following his graduation from Newton High School, Steve served in the U.S. Navy. He worked for many years as a custodian for the Newton public schools until retiring, and then worked for the Newton YMCA, He was a life member of the Newton YMCA and Chapter 23 DAV, and a longtime member of A.L. Nonantum Post 440 and the AOH in Watertown. Steve was also a longtime active member and P.E. R. of Newton Lodge No. 1321 B.P.O.E.

Steve was the beloved husband for 51 years of Elizabeth “Betty” (Morrissey) O’ Brien, the proud father of Stephen J. Jr. and his dear friend Carol Hoogasian of Worcester, Sean and his wife Mary of Waltham and Michael and his wife Kathleen of Attleboro, dear “Papa” of Maggie, Danny, Colleen, and Shea, and brother of Maureen Fessenden and her husband Frank of Falmouth, Margaret O’Brien and her dear friend Jeanne Griffith of Framingham and the late Paul F. O’Brien and son of the late Stephen and Mary (Lydon) O’Brien. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
