Still No Sign of the Newton Bear, But If You Should See It

Newton police are reminding residents what they should do if they encounter a bear.

There is still no sighting of the bear that was spotted in Newton in the Rowe Street area on Friday evening. The bear was monitored, but had wandered off before authorities got there.

The search was called off around 11:30 p.m., said WHDH-TV Channel 7.

As of Sunday evening, there have been no more reported sightings of the bear, but Newton police are reminding residents of how to respond should they encounter one.

Pointing to the Division of Fisheries and Wildlife site, authorities advise:

  • Remain calm. DON’T run from a bear. DON’T climb trees to escape a bear.
  • Ensure the bear has an escape route.
  • Back away when possible.
  • If attacked, immediately fight back.
  • DON’T feed bears.
