Suspect in Attack on Newton Middle Schooler To Be Mentally Evaluated

At a dangerousness hearing Monday a doctor testified that Carlos Cruz-Aguilar may be mentally ill.

NEWTON, MA - A Waltham man suspected in an assault on a Newton middle school student last week has been directed to undergo a 20-day mental health evaluation.

Carlos Cruz-Aguilar was sent to Bridgewater State Hospital Monday afternoon after his dangerousness hearing, WBZ-TV reported. A doctor testified that the 24-year-old exhibited signs of mental illness.

Cruz-Aguilar was arrested Thursday night and charged with armed robbery. A judge ordered he be held without bail over the weekend at his arraignment Friday.

Police say Cruz-Aguilar accosted a middle school boy on his way to the bus last Monday, threatening him with a large kitchen knife and throwing him in the street. He is also accused of stealing the boy's phone.

The boy was treated for minor injuries.
