Tree Planted in the 1800's Falls on Newton Home
The 191-year-old copper beech split Tuesday and crashed into a house in Newton; the residents were not home at the time.

NEWTON, MA - A 191-year-old copper beech tree split suddenly and fell into a Newton home on Tuesday.
The homeowner, Bill Kasper, told WBZ-TV that his house was strong enough to withstand the damage, but he was concerned about salvaging the tree.
"Iâm more concerned about the tree," Kasper told WBZ, "because I can fix the home, but Iâm not so sure if we can save the tree."

Kasper's home was built in 1878; his wife told the network that the tree crashed into the roof of the room where she frequently works. However, neither Kasper or his wife were home at the time.
An arborist said the split in the tree may have been caused by a fungal growth on one side, according to WBZ.
