Union Street Bar In Newton Centre Is Closed - But Will Be Right Back

The bar, which has been in business for three decades in Newton Centre is under new management.

NEWTON, MA — Tuesday evening, Union Street Bar and Grill Shut its doors and closed up shop after three decades. But lest you think this bar tucked around the corner from Comedor be destined for destruction, think again. The new owners, say this is temporary and hope to be reopened early next month.

Today the new owners told Patch they were planning on remodeling, reworking the menu and updating the entertainment at the restaurant bar.

Originally opened in 1989, it was known as a go-to bar that served the usual pub food you'd expect a bar to serve; nachos, wings, burgers you get the idea. Over time the bar morphed more into a restaurant and less of a bar, but now that David Prock,Ted Connelly, Raji Pine and Tom Griffin have bought the bar from the Tavern Group, they're going old school.

"The food fell a bit below standard in my opinion," said Brady, who also owns the Causeway BBQ and Draft Bar and Grille. "We want to do a bit better and bring it back to a place to drink and socialize," he said of the new venture.

The group is bringing in a billiards table and some video games downstairs, and they're planning to start getting bands to come play.

"I used to come here in college," said David Prock who is also working with the team, adding it was that vibe they wanted to bring back. And there are a lot of customers with nostalgia for the old place he said.

That's evidenced by the cascade of support on social media when Pine and Griffin both posted that the bar wasn't actually closing for good, but under new management.

"I was overwhelmed by the support," said Pine.

"This place is in for a drastic change in food, service and entertainment," said Brady. And speaking of food, Brady said they'd been interviewing chefs and were excited about the one that they were going with.
