Who Are Newton's Highest-Paid City Employees?

School, police and fire officials top the list.

NEWTON, MA – Last year, school, police and fire officials topped the list of highest-paid city employees, according to comptroller's data obtained by the Newton TAB. Newton Superintendent David Fleishman was the highest earner last year in both "regular" and "total" pay, which includes overtime, detail, incentive and other additional wages.

The number of municipal employees earning six figures is also on the rise; according to the TAB, 477 made more than $100,000 last year, compared to 374 the year before and 281 in 2014.

Here are the Top 10 highest-paid employees by "total" earnings:

  1. David Fleishman, Superintendent of Schools: $296,003.71
  2. James McCarthy, Police Officer: $221,908.69
  3. Bruce Proia, Fire Chief: $196,120.31
  4. David Tempesta, Police Lieutenant: $195,029.86
  5. David MacDonald, Police Chief: $193,479.10
  6. John Claflin, Police Sergeant: $191,237.89
  7. John Babcock, Police Sergeant: $181,755.27
  8. Michael Castro, Deputy Fire Chief: $180,486.77
  9. Israel Jimenez, Deputy Fire Chief: $178,888.02

Eliminating categories such as detail, incentive and overtime, the list of highest paid employees is dominated by members of the public school system. Assistant superintendents Toby Romer, Cynthia Paris Jeffries and Mary Eich, as well as the principals of Newton South High School and Brown and Bigelow middle schools all cracked the top 10.
