Will a Hearing Aid Make My Hearing Worse?

We’ll just get straight to the point.  No, a properly fit hearing aid will not make your hearing worse.  The key to the answer lies in the phrase “properly fit”.  There are several steps involved in ensuring that a hearing aid is fit properly.

Gathering information about your medical history particularly as it relates to your hearing is essential when we are ready to develop a plan to provide you with better hearing. The hearing test is essential in determining the type and degree of hearing loss and if any conditions exist that need to be evaluated further before moving on to the next step.

Your hearing healthcare professional will assess your history, lifestyle assessing areas of difficulty and need and provide you with options.  It is during this planning stage that the physical and electroacoustic characteristics of the hearing aids you select are defined.

During the verification stage, the hearing healthcare professional will determine if the hearing aids meet a set of standardized measures that include basic electroacoustics (sometimes this step is done prior to your visit) are cosmetically appealing, and fit comfortably.

By definition an adjustment is an alteration made to achieve a desired fit, appearance, or result.  During the adjustment stage, we will counsel you on the use and care of your hearing aids and discuss what you can realistically expect regarding the performance of your hearing aids.
