Woman Charged With OUI After Early Morning Crash, Men's Wearhouse Shoplifters and More from the Newton Crime Log

Friday, March 17

• Christopher Gavilanes, 29, of Waltham, was arrested and charged with operating a motor vehicle after suspension – subsequent offense.

Sunday, March 19

• A 24-year-old Newton woman was charged with OUI liquor after a single-car crash around 2 a.m. According to the police report, a crowd had gathered in front of 515 Crafts Street, where there was a vehicle with heavy front end and passenger side damage in the street facing the wrong direction. Both airbags had been deployed and there was wreckage throughout the street, according to police. The woman was standing outside of the car and people had stopped to make sure she was okay. Officers spoke to her and noticed she was unsteady on her feet, with a strong odor of alcohol emanating from her, police said. She was transported to Newton-Wellesley Hospital for evaluation. She was also charged with failure to stay in marked lanes.

Monday, March 20

• Emily Szeto, 35, of Newton, was arrested on warrant charges of larceny over $250 and embezzlement over $100.

• A past larceny was reported at the Men's Wearhouse on Needham Street. The caller said at approximately 12:30 p.m., two people came into the store and initially refused help. The female, described as approximately 5-foot-2 and heavyset, allegedly walked in and grabbed a handful of sport shirts. The male, described as approximately 5-foot-10 with a thin build, dark hair and a mustache, grabbed a sport coat to try on in the dressing room. While in the dressing room, the female allegedly handed the male the shirts to also try on and a short time later, the two left the store in a rush. The caller checked the fitting room and saw four empty hangers. Some of the clothing was still in the dressing room, but not all of it, the caller said.

I was dispatched to 215 Needham St, Mens Wearhouse, for a report of a past larceny.

Tuesday, March 21

• A shoplifting was reported at Bloomingdale's on Boylston Street. Dale Laliberte, 44, of Providence, RI, was arrested and charged with aggravated shoplifting.
