Woman Withdraws $4,900 to Give to Intimidating Man from 'IRS': Newton Police

NEWTON, MA - The following are excerpts from the Newton police log.

Nov. 30

  • Police responded to Highland Ave. for a report of larceny. The reporting person said that around 11:30 a.m. she received a call from a man who said he was from the IRS. The man was very intimidating and told her she would be arrested if she didn’t pay taxes. She said she agreed to pay and the male person had her withdraw $4,900 from her bank account. Then the man directed her to go to the Bank of America in Waltham to place the money into an account. The man then ordered her to find a printer and send a copy of the receipt and a copy of her license, which she did. She was informed to contact any other financial institutions and inform them that her bank information may have been compromised.
  • Police responded to William Street for a report of fraud. A man said a payment was made and shipped from his computer to Connecticut before realizing payment had not been made. The computer had already arrive and was signed for.
  • Police responded to Joseph Road for a report of past breaking and entering. A woman returned back to her residence and noticed that the door was locked. She proceeded to her garage to retrieve the spare house key. Upon gaining entry into her residence, she noticed several items moved around. Officers searched the house and cleared it with no one in the residence. She said she noticed that her Dell laptop was missing. Several drawers had been opened and rummaged through with various costume jewelry missing. She said she had a large amount of cash lying next to the bed that was taken.
