Gas prices continue to plummet in Massachusetts, and in the country.

Massachusetts gas prices continue to drop, with AAA reporting that prices are down 10 cents from last week for the 17th straight week of falling prices.

AAA’s survey, taken on Jan. 5, shows that self-serve, regular unleaded averaged $2.36 a gallon.

Locally, prices are 42 cents lower than a month ago, and the current price if 16 cents more than the national average ($2.20). Last year at this time, Massachusetts’ average was $3.47, which is $1.11 higher.

“Lower gas prices continue to be welcome news for consumers, who are saving an estimated $500 million each day,” said Mary Maguire, director of public and Legislative Affairs at AAA Northeast, in a press release. “Barring any unforeseen circumstances, AAA sees no reason for this trend not to continue in the short term.”
