The weather looks less than stellar for Patriots’ Day, which is also Marathon Monday, and the start of April vacation week for many school children.

A wind-soaking rain is expected Monday afternoon and evening, according to the National Weather Service, accompanied by unseasonably chilly temperatures.

The rain will move into the region from the west, mainly after 11 a.m. Patchy fog is expected after 10 Monday morning. Temperatures started in the low 40s on Monday morning in much of the region, and the high is only expected to reach 51. Breezy, and winds could gust as high as 33 miles per hour on Monday afternoon, according to the NWS.

Chance of precipitation is 100 percent. New precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

A few thunderstorms are possible later tonight. Scattered showers on Tuesday morning, followed by drier weather.

A cold front accompanied by showers is expected on Wednesday, according to forecasters, followed by much cooler weather into the weekend.

In addition, the NWS issued a coastal flood advisory for Monday into very early Tuesday for areas along the east and south coasts of Massachusetts and Rhode Island..

Patriot’s Day (or Patriots’ Day) commemorates the battles of Lexington and Concord, which were fought near Boston in 1775. Patriot’s Day is annually held on the third Monday of April. It should not be confused with Patriot Day, held on September 11 to mark the anniversary of terrorist attacks in the USA in 2001, according to timeanddate.com.
