Knights Win First Basketball Game of Season

North Andover High School started out its winter sports season with a 55-43 basketball win over Masconomet.

The Scarlet Knights boys varsity basketball team launched their 2010-2011 season with a bang -- defeating Masconomet Regional High School's Chieftains 55-43 at Tuesday night.

"The first game of the season you're probably going to have problems, but I was pleasantly surprised by the lack of mistakes," NAHS Coach Mike McVeigh said after the game.

The Knights started their charge to victory early on, racking up 20 points to Masconomet's 14 in the first quarter thanks to three-point shots by Zachary Karalis and Isaiah Nelson. In the second quarter, the Knights kept up their offense as Masconomet stumbled on the court trying to keep up.

Nelson, a 6-foot-4 sophomore forward, had a great game. He scored 10 seconds into the second quarter and another two three-point-shots in the third quarter -- one of which was in the last three seconds of the quarter.

McVeigh stopped shy of calling Nelson a rising star, but acknowledged his impressive performance Tuesday.

"Isaiah is a good player and an excellent young man, and we think he's going to get better and better," McVeigh said.

In the last quarter, the Chieftains showed some momentum and started pushing back the Knights, but they couldn't catch up, and the game ended with NAHS freshman Brendan Miller making two foul shots and bringing the final score to 55-43.

"It was a good win," McVeigh said. "And I was impressed by Masco."
